Summary: Claire and Peter have been dating for a year. She thinks he has nothing planned for their anniversary, but what he does have planned will take her breath away.
A/N: Can definitely be read as a standalone, but references events in my "Unrelated" series. All you need to know is that Peter and Claire thought they were related for several years until they found out Peter was adopted.
Also, this story (mainly the final chapter) is my first attempt at smut, so I hope you like it!
Walk Through The Memories: Chapter 1
Claire figured that a one year anniversary was supposed to be a special event. She'd never made it that far with anyone else, but was certain it was the sort of thing that demanded celebration. Peter, unfortunately, didn't seem to be of the same opinion. Every time Claire brought up dinner or going to the theater or staying in a nice hotel room, or anything, he just told her not to worry and that it wasn't a big deal anyway.
At first she assumed that Peter was just being severely laid back, which wouldn't have been surprising. Then she thought maybe he was planning on surprising her, but he wouldn't even hint that she should wear something nice on Friday. Instead, when she asked what to wear, he said, "You can wear that old cheerleading outfit of yours for all I care."
It was enough to make a girl wonder why she was even with that sort of guy in the first place. "Why?" was a question Claire found herself asking consistently throughout the week.
On Monday, he'd made that comment about not caring what she wore.
On Tuesday, he left for work without kissing her goodbye.
On Wednesday, she gave him the silent treatment and he barely seemed to notice, except for a kiss on her head and a questioning "Hard day at work?" to which she nodded even though work had been fine.
On Thursday, she flipped out at him and yelled about the impossibility of getting tickets or reservations now. "Why don't you care?" she screamed. "I do," he replied. Then Hiro called and Peter said that he had to answer and he walked out of the front door with his phone. Claire was feigning sleep by the time Peter returned and slipped under the covers. She didn't respond when he whispered her name and brushed his fingers along her cheek. She didn't move when he said, "I love you," before placing a soft, lingering kiss on her forehead.
On Friday morning, Claire was awake before Peter and on her way to an early morning biology lab when she realized that she'd been acting a little crazy lately. She'd been pushing him on this anniversary thing and it was out of character for her. Part of the reason she loved being with Peter was that they could be themselves and if he didn't want a big to-do over their anniversary, it shouldn't matter. It wasn't their style anyway. She liked dressing up and going out, but was more at home wearing jeans and one of Peter's hoodies while they watched a movie and cuddled on the couch. Peter, even more than her, preferred quiet nights in. They'd been to some campaign events for Nathan together and had always left early. Peter didn't look like Peter with his hair all slicked back.
Unfortunately, Claire's mood went downhill during class. She'd taken it as an elective in hopes to learn a bit more about her powers, but it ended up being mostly a pain in the ass. Luckily graduation wasn't too far off and then she wouldn't have to deal with this class or classes like it ever again. It also didn't help that several of her classmates asked what she and Peter had planned (because she'd confided about the anniversary in one of her giddier moments).
By the time Claire returned to the apartment, soaking wet from a sudden downpour, she was in a wretched mood again. The only difference was that the blame had shifted from Peter to the general situation. She tossed her bookbag on the floor by the door and went and plopped down on the couch. She closed her eyes and prayed that the day would be over soon because then things would be back to normal, and she would be back to normal. Most importantly, she and Peter as a couple would be back to normal once this anniversary from hell was over with.
She was still laying on the couch in wet clothes when Peter came home.
"Claire? Are you okay?"
"Fine," she mumbled.
He walked over and knelt beside the couch. His hand brushed over her hair, drying it along the way.
"Happy anniversary, Claire," he said before brushing a short, sweet kiss across her lips. "I love you."
Claire smiled in spite of herself. "I love you too."
"You should probably change out of those wet clothes," Peter suggested after another quick kiss.
"Can't you just heat the rest of me up?" Claire asked, grinning at the double entendre.
Peter smiled. "As much as I'd love to take you up on that offer, I think you should really go change."
Claire sat up and gave Peter a quick peck on the cheek before standing.
"Fine, but you better take me up on the offer later tonight. Everyone deserves great sex on their anniversary," Claire announced with a wink. Peter laughed.
"I think I may have gotten you the exact right present," he said as she walked into the bedroom.
Claire started stripping off her wet clothes and relished in the chill of the air-conditioned apartment on her wet skin.
"Can we get pizza or something?" she yelled out the door. "I'm getting hungry."
"I had something else in mind," Peter called back, "but if you want pizza, we can always do that instead."
Claire threw her shirt and jeans into the laundry basket and was about to unhook her bra when she saw something red and white on the blue bedspread. It was attached to a hanger and when Claire lifted it up she saw a beautiful and slightly familiar looking red and white dress. It was knee-length with a scoop neck and three-quarter length sleeves.
Confused, Claire brought the dress out to where Peter was sitting and watching TV.
"Peter, what's this?" She held the dress out in front of her.
"A dress," he answered simply. "I saw it and it reminded me of you."
"Okay," she said slowly, still not entirely sure what was going on.
"I hope it's the right size. I checked the tags on your other dresses."
He seemed nervous and insecure. Claire hadn't seen him like that in such a long time. It reminded her of the way he'd looked after their first kiss. His eyes were tentatively hopeful as they alternated focus between her and the dress and the floor. He ran his fingers through his hair and scratched the back of his neck.
Claire smiled and walked over to her boyfriend. She grabbed his hand before he started to run it through his hair a second time and used her other hand to cup his cheek before leaning down to kiss him slowly. Their fingers interlaced and Claire brushed her lips against Peter's with reverence and love. When his lips started to move in response, Claire felt the resurgence of the connection she'd been missing all week. She missed just being with him.
Her fingers trailed down his cheek and around to the back of his neck as his free hand reached up to touch her waist. She slipped her hand down the collar of his shirt and caressed his bare skin as the soft cotton shirt caressed hers.
Peter pulled her down onto his lap with a tug and she stumbled, not wanting to untangle their fingers or release her hold on his lips or the back of his neck, before steadying herself. It wasn't until Peter's fingers started to reach across her stomach and his lips traveled down to her collarbone that she realized she was still only in her underwear.
"Peter." His name came out as a moan without her intending it.
"Claire." Peter said her name into the skin on her neck and the vibration almost caused Claire to forget what she was going to say in the first place.
"Thank you," she said as she moved her hand from his neck and lifted his head. His eyes were dark and loving. "Thank you for the dress."
She moved to kiss him briefly in thanks before speaking again, but her boyfriend's lips and tongue distracted her as he turned her chaste kiss into a more passionate one. His free hand wandered over her bare legs, rubbing the cotton of her underwear before traveling up her side and skimming the underside of her breast with his thumb.
Claire moaned and squeezed Peter's hand tight. He gripped her hand three times in quick succession: I love you.
"So glad we don't have plans," Claire said between kisses.
"Not exactly true," Peter whispered into her ear as he cupped her breast and kneaded it slowly. Claire moaned and it occurred to her that Peter still had way too many clothes on.
"What?" she asked absently as she started to try and unbutton Peter's shirt.
"Got plans," Peter said succinctly as her hand slid under the fabric of his shirt and her lips met his neck. "Got distracted. Black underwear."
As if to emphasize his point, Peter's hand went down to Claire's hip where it tugged at the lacy edge of her underwear. She smiled against his skin.
"I thought we weren't doing anything and you were going to give me great sex as a present." Claire looked up at Peter and gave him an exaggerated pout. "I want those to be our plans."
"Maybe later," Peter said before pulling her into another steamy kiss. "You wanted an eventful anniversary, Claire Bennet, and that's what you're going to get."
Be careful what you wish for, Claire thought as Peter pulled away.
"Sorry I was such a bitch this week. I wasn't acting like myself. We don't need any big plans or reservations. I just got caught up in what I thought a one year anniversary should be like, but that's not us. We're not formal like that."
"Well, if it makes you feel better," Peter said, "I'd made all those fancy reservations and was going to surprise you, but about a week ago I saw that dress and I realized afterward that we should celebrate our relationship in a way befitting our relationship. So I came up with a different plan."
Claire wasn't sure at the moment if she wanted to do anything other than kiss Peter, but he was smiling like he was excited so she smiled back.
"What's this top secret plan of yours?"
"I've got some stuff to do. Why don't you finish getting dressed?" he said with a pointed grin at her body. "I'll meet you back here in a few minutes."
"Okay," Claire sighed. "But you owe me. You know how much I hate surprises."
"I know."
Then Peter vanished.
